1972 Cadillac Eldorado

Let’s face it. The design departments in today’s automotive industry have let us down… hard. Most new cars are heinous or, at best, expressionless machines, indistinguishable from any other car on the road. Nothing special. The big modern gas guzzler just looks like a clumsy beast that had had too many carbs and silicone injections, resulting in an ugly bloated road monster on steroids.

Once upon a time, however, the American car enjoyed an era of real elegance. Sure, the big ones (which we nicknamed “boats” when I was a kid) were highly fuel inefficient like today’s Escalades or Hummers, but there was a distinctive flair and style to their size, with graceful lines and silhouettes. Sure, they were big. But they never seemed to look fat.

The ones that stood out had their own distinct character. From far away, you could quickly tell the difference between a Cadillac Eldorado, a Buick Riviera or a Chrysler Imperial. They were special. They were beasts, yes, but man were they elegant.
