After trying who knows how many different soaps over the years, from the most expensive soaps that look impressive to guests to Ivory, I’ve simply settled on what works. For me, it’s Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Pure Castile Liquid Soap. It cleans and invigorates the skin and the senses wonderfully, and it contains essential oils, giving the skin a good clean without drying. I look forward to every shower with it.
Like most guys, I wear my hair short, which means I really don’t need to fall into the shampoo/conditioner trap for a good head-cleaning. Hence, I use Dr. Bronner’s as my shampoo, too. True, the essential oils and other ingredients can leave a light residue on the hair shaft, but it cleans and moisturizes my scalp and leaves my hair malleable and primed for the messy and tossed style that so many of us gents enjoy.
It comes in other fragrances like Eucalyptus, Almond, Rose, Baby Mild, Citrus, Tea Tree and Lavender, but Peppermint is their best seller with good reason. I’ve been using it for almost ten years, and it’s the only bottle in my shower.
All the ingredients used in Dr. Bronner’s soaps are 100% guaranteed fair trade, and the bottle is made from 100% post-consumer plastic. One of the best parts? The world’s best soap is also one of the world’s least expensive. A 32 oz. bottle of this concentrated gold (pictured) lasts me about a month and runs between $10 and $17, depending on where you buy it and if it’s on sale. If you don’t want to order online, you can typically find it in Whole Foods and other health food stores. (CVS here in New York carried it for a short time.)
