Welcome to Volume 5, which is, for the most part, another collection of golden throwbacks. Each of these tracks takes me to such specific places in my life.
“Native New Yorker” first hit my ears when I was a native Clevelander working in a Boston nightclub called Quest (1270 Boylston), “Hey Ladies” from Paul’s Boutique (1989) secured my fandom with the Beastie Boys in my college days, “Sex (I’m A…)” reminds me of a period in the 80s when sexual subtext in music became more overt (“Erotic City” anyone?), “You Belong To Me,” which Carly Simon co-wrote with Michael McDonald from The Doobie Brothers, will always remind me of the summer of ’78, and “Freeek!” was hopeful evidence that George Michael could get dark. (It was also the last song I played as a DJ in a bar in the East Village in 2004.) I could go on, but I won’t bore you.
Enjoy Volume 5.
