Like countless others, I absolutely loved the first season of the U.K. series Downton Abbey. It was like a romantic extension of Gosford Park. I watched all seven episodes in swift succession thanks to Netflix, and couldn’t get enough.

Though I loved every frame of the show, I must confess that my favorite sub-plot involved the unrequited love affair between Mr. Bates and Anna, played with staggering sweetness and vulnerability by Brendan Coyle and Joanne Froggatt respectively.

When watching a show or a movie, I have an ear for a good score. Some of my favorite music in the world comes from the work of legendary film score composers like Ennio Morricone, Elmer Bernstein, John Barry and Jerry Goldsmith, just to name a few. The music for Downton Abbey was composed by John Lunn.

Mr. Lunn’s score was beautiful throughout, but one piece that particularly caught my ear was the cue played under the scenes between Bates and Anna. It’s an absolutely gorgeous piece of music that had me rewinding the scenes just so I could hear it again. Sweet, touching, sad, stunning.

Unfortunately, the original soundtrack for Downton Abbey is not yet available in the U.S. But… I did get my hands on it and wanted to share two of the sweetest minutes of music I can think of right now. The piece is called “Story of My Life.” I hope you find it half as beautiful as I do.
