When I adopted Smokey on November 21, 2009, he was a shy and frightened four-legged furry little sausage weighing fourteen pounds. Today, he’s a happy and healthy thirty-pound young man of two.

The moment I set him on the floor of my apartment, my life was forever altered as he explored his new home. He was easy to train and very responsive to the treat/reward system for good behavior. By now, we have an almost psychic bond and a fantastic understanding of one another’s rhythms. If you break it down, he knows me better than anyone. (Dog people get this.)

My only regret about getting a dog is that I didn’t do it sooner. And getting a mutt from a shelter is the only way to go, as far as I’m concerned. After getting sober, getting Smokey is the best thing I’ve ever done.

Once I got him, it was no longer all about me. He ruined my life… thank God.
