While it’s hotter than Satan’s taint outside, it’s a great time to stay indoors and catch up on the latest original series from Netflix: Orange Is the New Black. The show is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison, and follows the story of a newly-engaged blond WASP (Taylor Schilling) who goes to prison for fifteen months for a carrying a suitcase of drug money ten years ago. I mainlined the entire series when Netflix released all 13 episodes for streaming on July 11th, and I’d call it a dark comedy with some of the most hilarious moments I’ve seen in a long time on the small screen. With a cast of mostly unknowns, the show relies on story, character and performance. Life in Litchfield women’s federal prison is perfectly summed up by Natasha Lyonne’s character: “It’s just like the Hamptons, only fuckin’ horrible.” And it’s an absolute blast to watch. Fortunately for us, Netflix renewed the show for a second season. Enjoy.
