‘Tis the season. Today in New York, we hit 36º F in late October. It was time to bust out gloves.

For someone who frequently goes outside to walk the dog, and uses a touchscreen smartphone that requires the electric current flowing through human skin to operate, it can mean another tedious winter of repeatedly pulling off my gloves with my teeth. A certain dexterity is required that one cannot get with a traditional set of gloves. Enter the fingerless glove.

I got Smokey in 2009, the same year I got an iPhone. In that first winter with dog and touchscreen phone, I learned that I needed the use of my fingers while outdoors in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Pulling out duty bags while answering a phone call from my sister Tracy can be very tricky.

Fingerless gloves are certainly no substitute for regular gloves or mittens when it comes to warmth. But for the quick dog walks and using the iPhone on those cold to medium-cold days, they’re terrific.

My last trip over to H&M solved the problem. They had started to roll out their winter wear, which included this pair of wool fingerless gloves. Actually, it was a set of two pairs… for $5.99.
