Today is the perfectly appropriate day to celebrate the marriage of John Bartlett and John Esty, who officially tied the knot at the New York City Clerk’s Office on Monday, June 24th, 2013. John Bartlett is perhaps best known as an award-winning men’s clothing designer, and John Esty is the man behind an eponymous framing outfit that produces superlative custom work in the West Village here in NYC.
For several years now, Bartlett has taken a bold stance for compassionate fashion by using no animal-derived materials in his John Bartlett and Tiny Tim collections. He excludes wools, leathers and, of course, all furs. The pair is also very active with pet adoption support and advocacy from animal rescue shelters. (It was from one of John Bartlett’s adoption events for North Shore Animal League where I got my dog Smokey.)
For their big day, the handsome Johns donned matching cotton Ludlow suits from J.Crew, Tiny Tim camouflage ties by John Bartlett (Esty in blue, Bartlett in green), and smart kicks from Chrome Industries. As with all smart sartorial choices, the clothes are merely complementary dressing for the confidence, pride and happiness exuded from within by these two guys.
My warmest congratulations to John and John on their very happy day, made even more significant and special on this historic day.

Congrats to them, but sneakers on your wedding day? You should have a chat with them about ‘the endangered sense of occasion’!
Oh, I definitely get your point on this, Mike. I would personally not wear sneakers at my own wedding. But it’s like this: John is an established designer, an icon of sorts, whose job is to rethink templates, mix it up and play. I may not always agree with designers’ choices, but they always get my applause. Take Thom Browne… he often drives me nuts, but he’s never boring and he marches to his own beat of an old, established song. It’s fun to watch. With Bartlett, particularly in light of his animal-free angle, the sneaker is part of his now well-established character. It works for him. Also, many public figures, especially those in the style trade, carry masters degrees and Ph.D.s from the University of I Can Do Whatever the Fuck I Want. The world has a lot of aspiring students at that school, but few have an actual degree. And at the end of the day… confidence and conviction are the keys. With those two characteristics, one can get away with virtually anything. I could technically wear sneakers with a suit, but I lack the confidence to pull it off with any conviction.
