This achingly beautiful video of Leonard Cohen’s “Leaving the Table” was just released. The song was on Cohen’s final album, You Want It Darker, which came out in October 2016 just days before his death.
The timing of the album, the timing of his death and the theme of the song lend a haunting backdrop for the piece, in which we hear Cohen sing “I’m leaving the table; I’m out of the game” in such an unsentimental way as an animated paper cutout of him floats among a scrapbook of his life. It’s as if he’s taking a last look before moving on.
When I go, I only hope it happens so gracefully.
