I’m not a member of that tribe that needs to flaunt a #sexpile of luxury watches for validation from other watch bros. I just need one good watch.

Truth be told, I actually have three good watches, two of which are Timexes. But I really only need one, and I’d be fine with just my handsome, trusty Mougin & Piquard “Oceanique,” which is my daily go-to.

Some don’t take their watch too seriously, preferring a fun design like a Custom Photo Watch, but others believe a watch, like a fragrance, is a signature thing. A man only needs one good one for his entire adult life. One maker of fantastic tool watches that really count is Hager.

Started in 2009, Hager (pronounced “Hah-ger”) is an American brand that makes watches with the looks, craftsmanship standards and features of other tool watches on the luxury spectrum, but with at least one less zero in the price tag. With a small collection of handsome, classic yet modern, well-made and affordable automatic watches, it seems they’ve done just that.

The two models currently available are the Commando Professional ($600) and GMT Traveler ($700). Each watch features automatic movement, a marine-grade stainless steel case and bracelet, water resistance to 660ft/200m and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The GMT Traveler boasts a rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel and 24-hour hand that enables the world traveler to read three different time zones, two simultaneously.

Coming soon is a new limited edition model in the lineup called the A12 Skymaster.

If I were in the market for a seriously handsome, well-made, affordable and workable statement watch to last me through the end of my days, I’d seriously consider pulling the trigger on one of these.
