When Oscar winning collaborators Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross spun out their stunning score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, we were treated to a taste of Trent’s post-Nine Inch Nails project: How to destroy angels_. The taste on the soundtrack was a cover of Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music’s “Is Your Love Strong Enough?” featuring the hypnotic vocal stylings of Mariqueen Maandig, who also happens to be Mrs. Trent Reznor.

How to destroy angels_ just released An omen EP_, a thirty-three minute collection of six tracks that are at once dizzying, murky, gritty, pulsing and altogether euphoric.

As someone who has witnessed Trent Reznor’s career since his Cleveland beginnings (My brother Mark was the original NIN tour manager, starting in Mark’s humble Ford Econoline van and working through the bus/truck/plane Downward Spiral world tour.), I have watched and listened with fascination at the evolution of Trent’s growth as an artist. From the industrial/metal/dance/goth angst of Nine Inch Nails to the more sober, refined and almost elegant sounds of The Social Network and Dragon Tattoo scores, Trent just gets better with time and has come to a really interesting place creatively and artistically.

In addition to Mr. & Mrs. R and Social Network/Dragon Tattoo partner Atticus Ross, How to destroy angels_ also includes longtime collaborator (and wizard graphic designer) Rob Sheridan. If An omen EP_ is a clue to where How to destroy angels_ is headed, I’m excited for the future.

Get it.
