Looking better in a $500 suit than the guy who spent $5,000 is not only possible but immeasurably satisfying. One of the best resources for realizing said possibility and satisfaction is Suitsupply.

In case you don’t already know, Suitsupply makes incredible affordable suits in a considerable range of styles, colors and patterns. The prices vary depending on the fabric, which is really what makes one suit more or less expensive than another. In the universe of serious suits for discerning men, all of Suitsupply’s suits are quite reasonable. The most expensive line is the Red Line, ranging from $640 to $1,100. The Purple Line starts at $470 and goes up to $700. Then we have their collection of very handsome, well-made suits for $400 called the Blue Line.

$400. Are they good suits? Very. The Blue Line is a collection made in their “Napoli” design, a versatile and classic suit design that would look good on almost anyone. It has a two-button jacket with a natural, lightly padded shoulder, functioning sleeve buttons and a double vent. On the inside, they are constructed with a cotton canvas reinforced with horse hair. The pants are flat-front. The suits in the Blue Line are made with all-season Super 110 or Super 120 wools from Vitale Barberis Canonico, Reda and Ormezzano, all among the finest mills in Italy.

So I guess I could amend my cheeky statement above by saying that while it’s possible (and immensely satisfying) to look better in a $500 suit than the guy who spent $5000, it can also be done for $400.

Hi George. Again, thanks for keep me abreast of what’s out there clothing-wise. I work part time at The Container Store. Two guys came in multiple times in one day for nice clear plastic shirt drawers, saying they “worked two blocks away”. Finally I asked what the project was, and lo and behold they ran the Suit Supply location in Bloomingdales – two blocks away. They needed neat, visible behind the scenes merchandise storage, which The Container Store does well. I said “oh, I heard of you from George Hahn”. I told them about you, and I learned more about them, and their basic run down of what Suit Supply is sounded good – like your articles about them. I am going to explore them now, since they do only work two blocks away. Thanks again for writing up good affordable places.
