Bryan Cranston has emerged as one of the few Hollywood men who consistently turns it out beautifully on red carpets these days. Whether in black tie, suit and tie, or suit with no tie, he shows up with smart, well-tailored, age-appropriate handsomeness that alludes to a real Cary Grant-like dexterity with clothes. He looks like a real movie star – but a movie star who comes from Earth, not one who hails from other alien sartorial planets. He balances a real, masculine, effortless glamour with a guy-next-door accessibility. It’s rare and it’s nice to see.
Photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg for the August cover story in GQ, Cranston is wearing all peak-lapel, single-breasted suits, exquisitely showcasing them a fantastic option. I wouldn’t wear them in every situation, but there are many occasions where they’re absolutely perfect. This photo shoot, however, almost makes wish I made peak lapels my signature look, because Cranston knocks it out of the park.
A word to the young (or other desperados) who try so very hard to make a splash or, worse, a “statement” – look to your elder here. This is a man who looks like he cares about his clothes, not a man who looks like he cares only about his clothes.

Nice suit and ensemble – my only comments echo what Alan Flusser said about Cary Grant in the intro to his book, “Clothes and the Man”. Grant has a large head, so instead of suits with natural shoulders, he wears suits with wider shoulders to better balance the proportion. Bryan Cranston appears to have a large head too and yet is shown in tight, narrow cut suits with narrow ties, which are the fashion now – whether they work with one’s physique or not. He looks – a little – like a lollipop figure.
