The competition at last night’s 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was tight and the talent pool was terrific. It was a great year in television, with some of my favorite shows getting well-earned nominations and some well-deserved wins. Though Mad Men – one of the best shows in television history – came home with no trophies, Jon Hamm came away the clear winner as best dressed.

Hamm played it smart, going Clooney classic with a gorgeous tux by Giorgio Armani. In fact, Hamm’s tux looked like the very same Armani worn by George Clooney at this year’s Golden Globes. No foul there, since we’re talking about timeless men’s formalwear, which can really only be remixed in a finite number of ways.

The Armani tux in question is a midnight blue, two-button, single-breasted dinner jacket with perfectly proportioned peak lapels that were neither too wide nor too narrow. It’s a trend-proof evening suit that would have looked great in 1960, 1970, 1980… whenever. Years from now, when we look back at images like his from last night, we’ll still be able to say “That’s what a real movie star looks like.”

He completed the picture with clean and handsome hair and grooming, honoring the occasion with graceful, glamorous, Cary Grant-grade elegance. Slam dunk.

I have always wondered if Clooney was doing it consciously or if he is just the current iteration of a Hollywood Type that we need to anchor the Movies. While watching Irreconcilable Differences I was stunned and delighted at how well he channeled Grant’s grace and physicality…it was uncanny, really, and a treat to watch.

As always, Mr. Hahn, well done and necessary. Thanks
