My Flea Market Fetish
I’m a sucker for a flea market. Here in Hell’s Kitchen in NYC, we have the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market every Saturday and Sunday on West 39th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, weather permitting. Over the years, I’ve found great stuff there. Sometimes I don’t plan on buying anything and end up finding something I can’t live without, like my Hardoy “Butterfly” Chair, my vintage brushed aluminum desk lamp or my favorite fedora (pictured). Even if I don’t actually … Continue reading

Hell’s Kitchen Gems: Thriftway Pharmacy
When I need to reload on Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castille Soap, Seventh Generation Dish Soap, Tom’s of Maine Unscented Deodorant or Toothpaste or my beloved Weleda Skin Food, Thriftway Pharmacy is my place. Quietly stowed on Tenth Avenue between West 45th and 46th Streets, it’s just up the street from my apartment and my go-to stop for the occasional prescription fill, too. On a positive canine note, they’re also dog-friendly. Smokey loves going there. Support your local businesses!

On My Radar: 9/16/11
David Byrne blows up the world (under the High Line) (@NYMag) My favorite New York eclecticist, David Byrne, has created a temporary installation under the High Line at 25th Street: a blown-up globe, like a giant beach ball version of the globes on which we learned geography in school, stuffed under a section of the High Line. The temporary installation, called Tight Spot, includes an audio feature (of course) also created by DB. It will be in place until October … Continue reading

Hurricane Irene From The 19th Floor
Click the photo to advance to the next image. I battened down the hatches, filled the tub, stocked up on water, prepped a go bag for Smokey and followed all the other suggestions from official NYC sources. Aside from good snacks and a Netflix marathon, the most exciting thing that happened in my humble 19th-floor atelier was a handful of cool photos from the big night. Enjoy.
