Stanley Kubrick, Photographer
Before he began his career as a director of iconic films we love, like Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, New York City native Stanley Kubrick was a photographer. He sold his first image to LOOK magazine in 1945 at the age of 17, and continued to work as a New York City-based photographer for the magazine until 1950. Curators at the Museum of the City of New York and VandM have gone … Continue reading

My Flea Market Fetish
I’m a sucker for a flea market. Here in Hell’s Kitchen in NYC, we have the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market every Saturday and Sunday on West 39th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, weather permitting. Over the years, I’ve found great stuff there. Sometimes I don’t plan on buying anything and end up finding something I can’t live without, like my Hardoy “Butterfly” Chair, my vintage brushed aluminum desk lamp or my favorite fedora (pictured). Even if I don’t actually … Continue reading

Hell’s Kitchen Gems: Thriftway Pharmacy
When I need to reload on Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Castille Soap, Seventh Generation Dish Soap, Tom’s of Maine Unscented Deodorant or Toothpaste or my beloved Weleda Skin Food, Thriftway Pharmacy is my place. Quietly stowed on Tenth Avenue between West 45th and 46th Streets, it’s just up the street from my apartment and my go-to stop for the occasional prescription fill, too. On a positive canine note, they’re also dog-friendly. Smokey loves going there. Support your local businesses!

How To Be A Man: A Talk With Glenn O’Brien
Glenn O’Brien is a writer-at-large, and currently featured regularly in GQ Magazine as “The Style Guy.” He studied film as a graduate student at Columbia, and, after publishing a review for a film, was hired by Andy Warhol as a music critic for Warhol’s then nine month old magazine called Interview. In the late ’70s and early ’80s, he hosted a cable-access program called TV Party, which featured downtown art and music figures like David Byrne, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Blondie and … Continue reading

Bike Lanes
In the wake of recent NYPD crackdowns on bicycling violations, videographer Casey Neistat got a ticket for not riding his bike in the bike lane. With hundreds of automotive and other “quality of life” violations happening every hour at any given intersection in New York, the ridiculousness of the Neistat’s citation is made even more hilarious by this video. Enjoy. (For the record, I violate my share of bicycling laws, too.) Follow Casey Neistat on Twitter: twitter.com/caseyneistat
