Glenn O’Brien is a writer-at-large, and currently featured regularly in GQ Magazine as “The Style Guy.” He studied film as a graduate student at Columbia, and, after publishing a review for a film, was hired by Andy Warhol as a music critic for Warhol’s then nine month old magazine called Interview.

In the late ’70s and early ’80s, he hosted a cable-access program called TV Party, which featured downtown art and music figures like David Byrne, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Blondie and The Clash. From there, he worked as a writer, editor and creative director for several magazines. He also edited Madonna’s Sex book.

Earlier this year, he published a new book called How To Be A Man: A Guide to Style and Behavior for the Modern Gentleman (Rizzoli). To talk about the book, some of his experiences and his insights on style, culture and being a man, he sat down with Jesse Thorn of The Sound of Young America from Maximum Fun and Public Radio International. It’s a fascinating interview, and I hope you enjoy it.
