If I feel like sketching a draft of a new site design, I do it on a note pad. Doodling? Same. For these and other note-taking, sketching or doodling tasks, we have Field Notes. Fieldnotes originally refer to notes taken by scientists during or after their observation … Continue reading →

If, like me, you wash and iron your own shirts and if, like me, most of those shirts are white, you probably get ring around the collar and the inside of the cuffs. The temptation is to use bleach or some other chemically corrosive agent you found in the laundry aisle at Rite Aid. Don’t. The vixens over at The Laundress have created the Wash & Stain Bar. It was originally developed for taking care of tough stains on sweaters … Continue reading →

Weather-permitting, I always do a lap through the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market, which happens on West 39th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues on Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes there is an overflow of gems that catch my eye, sometimes not. There are furniture items, unique housewares and home accessories, collectibles, records, glasses, photos, bags, hats, clothes and accessories (though women can typically have more fun at the flea with the clothes), and much more. Every weekend, it’s like a different … Continue reading →

I was regrettably unable to attend the wedding in California, but I was delighted to see the photos of the proceedings on Facebook. Barb looked exquisite in her beautiful dress, and Tim was turned out handsomely in a timeless shawl collar tuxedo, a smart bow tie, a perfect white pocket square, understated studs and … Continue reading →

Maurice Sendak died today. He was 83. Having written and illustrated many children’s books and poems, he is most famous for his 1963 book Where The Wild Things Are. He was a man who devoted his life to his art, never having children and coming out as a gay man late in life. (He lived with his partner Eugene Glynn for 50 years until his death in 2007.) The audio clip here was from his interview with Terry Gross from … Continue reading →

Why this movie is no longer available on DVD or Blu-ray or available for streaming anywhere (at least in the U.S.) is beyond me. It’s essential viewing. “Ipcress proves again that one of the primal pleasures of moviegoing is a tingling, no-nonsense suspense yarn enlivened by honest good humor.” – Time Magazine “Caine skillfully resists any temptation he may have had to pep up the proceedings. In fact, his consistent underplaying adds considerably to the pull of the picture.” – … Continue reading →
