What I Would Wear To The 2012 Tony Awards
The average New York theater actor doesn’t enjoy as many zeros in his paycheck or as many stylist/designer resources as his Hollywood counterparts. But that doesn’t mean a veteran Broadway thespian can’t show up on the Tony Awards red carpet looking as smart and polished as an Armani-clad George Clooney or Tom Ford-clad Colin Firth without blowing two weeks’ pay. The Endangered Sense of Occasion
10 min., 2 sec. We’re now living in a culture where jeans have become a premium item, and sneakers have become the pumped, pimped and hyped norm. The result is a new breed of uber-casual adult man: the non-athlete wearing athletic footwear and over-specialized patterns of denim that – really not that long ago – would have been considered ladies jeans. This is where we are. Featured music: “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand – iTunes | Amazon “No You … Continue reading
An Endangered Species of Diner: Prime Burger in Midtown Manhattan
The old school New York diner is an endangered species. Ugly, pre-fab, over-produced chains seem to be the only places that can afford the street-level real estate, knocking down our glorious neighborhood joints one by one. This wonderful valentine to Prime Burger in midtown Manhattan was produced and directed by Ben Wu and David Usui of Lost & Found Films. See work from Lost & Found Films on Vimeo.

Awards shows for creative showbiz types can be fertile ground for formal wear experimentation gone disastrously wrong. Watch the Tony Awards and you’ll see what I mean. Actors or the managers and designers dressing them inappropriately sense an opportunity to stand out and dare be different, which is never a good idea. No one, at least in our lifetime, is going to reinvent men’s formalwear. The guys I’ve included here (or the ones who told them what to wear) clearly … Continue reading

My Flea Market Fetish
I’m a sucker for a flea market. Here in Hell’s Kitchen in NYC, we have the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market every Saturday and Sunday on West 39th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues, weather permitting. Over the years, I’ve found great stuff there. Sometimes I don’t plan on buying anything and end up finding something I can’t live without, like my Hardoy “Butterfly” Chair, my vintage brushed aluminum desk lamp or my favorite fedora (pictured). Even if I don’t actually … Continue reading
