My last spring mattress was losing its spring, and the time to trade up was imminent. I’ve heard about latex and memory foam mattresses for years, and I’ve reclined on them enough times to develop a keen interest in the idea. For some reason, I always presumed memory foam mattresses were the luxury domain of rich people. Then I discovered Casper.

I can’t remember where or when I first heard about Casper, but I remember being very impressed with their simple, explicit and transparent online presentation. The mattresses are made in the USA, combining premium latex foam for cooling and bounce and memory foam for support and comfort. The 10-inch thick casper mattress comes in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King sizes, with free shipping to the US and Canada and an option to return for a full, no-hassle refund within 100 days. The prices range from $500 for a Twin to $950 for a King. As a big fan of smart startups that disrupt a stale system with a superior product and service at a realistic price point, I was willing to give it a try. So I pulled the trigger on a full mattress for $750.

Three business days later, a 60 lb. box arrived from Casper. Before opening the box, Casper strongly (and wisely) suggests bringing the box into the room where the bed will live. Since I live in a studio, I dragged the box to the area of my apartment where the mattress would live. Once the box was placed, I followed the easy instructions for opening. Watching the mattress open and expand into shape was like watching time-lapse footage of bread baking. Within seconds, a new latex and memory foam mattress was up and ready for business. Glorious.

How is the mattress? Firm, yet soft, with just the right amount of bounce. To be totally honest, it has been providing quite possibly the best night’s sleep I’ve ever had. And contrary to the experience of a friend with a foam mattress from another provider, the mattress is cool, not hot. In other words… I’m not returning it. As comfy as the mattress is, I checked out some Mattress toppers reviewed by the dozy owl to keep it protected. Having a comfy bed really does make a difference to your sleep!!

I have it supported on an 8-inch box spring, making a combined height of 18 inches, the same height as the seat of my sofa and chairs. And though it’s totally optional, I decided to put a simple mattress pad/cover on the Casper. The total package is completed with good sheets and great pillows.

Casper has proven itself as another industry disruptor with a brilliant product, a smart delivery system and terrific customer service. The mattress is a great value and, most importantly, a great night’s sleep.

  1. I was interested in the Casper mattress, especially because it’s same day/next day shipping within NYC. My friend got it delivered and she loves it. I about to get a mattress myself until I read about Leesa the mattress. It’s supposed to be a smidge firmer than Casper but also a smidge more expensive.
Since I know I won’t be able to tell the difference between either mattress and will probably stick to the one I get last, I’m thinking of getting both mattresses and trying it that way but I don’t have room for that. And I don’t want my room to look like a 70s love nest. Until then, do you have any bed essentials? Mattress cover? Preferred sheets? Pillows? Thanks for reading my rambling.

Thank you! For sheets and pillows, I’m a new fan of the Hotel Collection from Macy’s, suggested by my friend, interior designer Glenn Gissler in a recent blog post about bed sheets. I had a mattress cover/pad on my old full-size bed and now use it on my Casper, which is probably unnecessary. If you feel like you want an extra pad on the mattress, go for it.

  2. Hi George
How do like the Casper mattress?
Did you put it directly on the floor or on a box spring or platform?

Hey, Stu. Love it! As I understand it, the Casper can be put anywhere a regular mattress can (floor, box spring, platform, etc.). Mine is on a slatted covered wood frame.
